Introducing Joe’s Logbook

Joe's LogbookThis is the day note taking finally came to Joe’s Goals. The project I’ve been working on in secret since the launch of Joe’s Goals just went live. It is called Joe’s Logbook. The idea behind it is to let users track daily notes with their goals and create personal journals to record their daily thoughts and experiences.

Do I have to signup again if I already use Joe’s Goals?

No! You kidding me? I use the Internet too. I hate having to constantly sign up for different applications. Joe’s Logbook works with Joe’s Goals and so your login will be the same.

How does it change my Goal tracking experience?

Joe’s Logbook is so incredibly simple it almost doesn’t need an explanation. Almost.

Let’s say you skipped your workout on Saturday because you had to pick up a friend at the airport. Now with Joe’s Logbook you can right click on that day and add a note to explain why you didn’t check it off. Likewise you can add a note the next Saturday to say you ran in a marathon instead of completing your regular exercise routine at the gym.

When you add a note to a goal a small red flag appears in the top right hand corner. Scrolling over the day pops up a tooltip, displaying the contents of the notes. Right clicking brings up a menu from which you can select “Edit Log”. From there you can update or clear your saved note.

Screenshot of Joe's LogbookHow can someone use Joe’s Logbook as a journal?

Part of the driving force behind Joe’s Logbook was to let people create daily journals. You can create as many logbooks as you want, tag them, sort them, and update them. Unlike a goal, you can’t place checks in the logbooks you create; but you can see the first part of the text of your entries for easy scanning.

The reason this is so awesome is that it lets you easily create a health journal, a dream journal, and a spending journal and edit and update them all from one page. You can create whatever you want. The interface works the same as editing log entries for goals and logbooks appear directly on your goal grid.

How does Joe use it?

I’ve played with a number of different logbooks during my testing, but the one I’ve found most profoundly meaningful is the one I use to count my blessings. Nothing is worse than getting to the end of the week and feeling like nothing went right. By logging each and every special event that brought a blessing to my life, I’m able to change my attitude and perception and take a more positive outlook.

Why is it still in beta?

All good things come in beta. Most of them also come with bugs. Joe’s Logbook is in beta because there are some known issues I’m working on and some unknown issues I hope users will send to me in bug reports. Want to help? Try it out, tell your friends, give me bug reports and suggestions via the feedback form.

Have fun with your Logbooks everyone!

Joe’s Logbook is an excellent addition to Joe’s Goals. Are there plans to be able to share the logbook as well. Would be good for accountability.

2

Yeah, I have some plans to rebuild the way goal sharing works to meet the needs of more users. I didn’t add goal sharing to the logbook so I could focus on a better overall solution. Stay tuned.

[…] Ian Smith (or Joe) has created a new online journal product called Joe’s Logbook. […]

I’ve been using Joe’s goals for a few months, and this is a great addition! I really like the ideas you’re having.

Questions: is right-click the only way to edit a log? Is a “Clear” button really needed?

Manuel: I think I may play with the right click requirement and the size of the box. I’ve been running reports on how people use the logbook and there are some good feature tweaks to be made. Thanks for the suggestions!

Thank you for the feature, Ian! I had actually been meaning to write you and ask for it. I noticed some odd behavior though. When I right-click directly on a check mark, “Edit Log” appears but when I click it, nothing happens. When I click anywhere in the box but on the check mark, expected behavior occurs. Now that I’ve figured it out, there’s no problem for me, but I wonder if new users could be turned off.

Great Ian! Not a feature request but a bug report here ;) There’s a problem with latin characters (á, ñ, etc) and I suppose with any not us-ascii character. The browser shows question marks after I reload the page.

Hello Ian, just wanted to know if you plan to fix the bug reported above on comment #7… I’ll keep using the logbook but I’d like to know if I’ll ever be able to type all the chars my language needs ;)
